The right-angle prism is an optical element used to bend the light path or deflect the image formed by an optical system by 90 degrees. It utilizes the critical angle property to efficiently guide incident light through internal total reflection. Right-angle prisms are commonly used in image combining and beam deviation applications. Additionally, optical coatings are often applied during installation to enhance performance.
Bena Optics can manufacture right-angle prisms from various materials, including VIS glass, UV fused silica, calcium fluoride, and zinc selenide. Each material exhibits different transmittance and characteristics across different wavelength ranges. For example, UV fused silica has high transmittance in the deep ultraviolet range, while calcium fluoride offers high transmittance in the wavelength range from 180 nm to 8 µm.
Compared to ordinary mirrors, right-angle prisms have a larger contact area and typical angles (such as 45° and 90°), making them easier to install and providing better stability and strength against mechanical stress. Additionally, right-angle prisms rely on the principle of total internal reflection to bend light, making them less dependent on coatings. Common applications include periscopes and binoculars, where they are used to change the direction of light and adjust the imaging position.
